Where are the latest reviews?
The last episode of Ebert & Roeper aired on August 17, 2008. After learning that the show's distributor, Disney-ABC Domestic Television, intended to revise the format of the show, both Roger Ebert and Richard Roeper publicly announced that they were officially leaving the show.
The first episode of the revamped show, now titled At the Movies, aired on September 7, 2008. After viewing the episode myself, I have decided not to continue posting the show's verdicts on this web site.
To be frank, I find the show's new format too loud, too busy, and too light on substantive content. I also feel that Disney's choice of hosts (television presenters instead of newspaper journalists) leaves the show without a trustworthy source for its film reviews.
Though I will no longer be updating this site with new review verdicts, I will continue to leave the past verdicts in place and perhaps even go back and add verdicts from earlier shows.
Roger Ebert and Richard Roeper have both said that they intend to somehow continue their original show's tradition. I hope they do, and if so, I would likely resume adding their verdicts to this site.
According to an ABC News article, 'At the Movies' Drops Hosts Lyons, Mankiewicz, Disney-ABC plans to return the show to its original format beginning September 5, 2009. The current hosts Ben Lyons and Ben Mankiewicz will be replaced by newspaper journalists A.O. Scott of the New York Times and Michael Phillips of the Chicago Tribune. I consider this to be a welcome change indeed. I respect the opinions of these two critics and prefer the show's original format. Given this news, I am seriously considering resuming updates to this site beginning in September.
